The e-mail that started it all
“Hello everyone: we have been in the coastal area of the earthquake epicenter for three days now and the scene is desolate. I would tell you that the tsunami caused much more damage than the earthquake (…) In the towns located on the coast there is practically nothing left standing (…) I am impressed by the look on people’s faces; a mixture of disbelief, sadness, pride and hope. And they know, we know, that we are going to get back on our feet and we know that we are going to do it together (…) As in every crisis, heroes always emerge, and as it usually happens in real life, those heroes are generally people who are not looking for fame or recognition, just to help, just to do good. And I have met several of them these days”.
History of Felipe Cubillos
Felipe Cubillos is born
On August 9, Felipe Cubillos Sigall was born in Viña del Mar.
Arturo Prat Naval School
During his childhood he was a cadet and finally graduated from the Instituto Nacional José Miguel Carrera.
Entrepreneur at heart
While Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the Universidad Diego Portales, he left his position to focus on the development of entrepreneurship programs to support people from low-income sectors. In 2006 he created Fundación Imagina, Pequeños Negocios Grandes Emprendedores.
Around the world
Felipe was the first Chilean along with José Muñoz to embark on a sailboat to sail around the world and compete in an international race Global Ocean Race 2008, being the first to cross Cape Horn and coming second in the competition in 2009. During the trip he started a blog where he wrote down thoughts and ideas that showed the profound impact of this experience on him.
The 27/F changed his life
After the 8.8 earthquake that hit Chile, he decided to dedicate himself to the reconstruction of his country, founding Desafío Levantemos Chile, and inviting everyone close to him to support his cause. It is in this organization where he embodies all his ideology and that to this day faithfully follows his values.
Fly high
At the age of 49, he died in a plane crash along with 5 other members of Desafío and other compatriots on their way to a mission on the island of Juan Fernández. Even so, his legacy and commitment to Chile lives on in our Foundation.
